Call for Proposals

Below is this year's Call For Proposals. The festival is a grass-roots effort, produced by and with performing artists to foster an extended public event full of improvised performance. See the Performer Resources page for information and guidance provided to our performers, and look around the site for more about the event, past and present.

Call for Proposals

The organizers of the DC 13th Annual Improvisation Festival invite proposals from performers to participate in this year's festival, to be held September 27-30, 2007.

The DC Improvisation Festival has been held annually in Washington for the past twelve years, bringing dance, acting, music and poetry to unexpected places, showcasing improvisation as a real art form.

This year's festival will be based largely on site-specific performances held in public places in Washington, DC. The site chosen for this year is downtown on G street between 7th and 12th Streets, though this may expand to include other streets nearby. This site includes the Metro Center metro station, the main DC public library, Flashpoint studio and gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery and American Art museum, among other sites. There may also be one or two 'stage' type sites -- indoors or outdoors yet to be determined -- where performances will occur regularly. All performances will be free.

Festival organizers will help however possible by providing publicity and a context for the performance, as well as assisting with procuring permits for public spaces.

If you choose to participate, we urge you to develop work in which the site itself is an integral part of the performance and ideally changes how observers experience that place in the future. While the work must include improvisation, some amount of set material and rehearsals are encouraged in order to showcase the highest quality performance art possible.

If you are interested, please respond with a short description of your envisaged performance by sending us a Word document with the following information:

  1. Name of the artist creating the work, a short bio (4-6 lines only, please), email address and best phone number to reach you.

  2. Number of performers involved

  3. Your preferred performance site

  4. A short description of the envisaged performance, including an explanation of how the work will genuinely incorporate the site (maximum 500 words)

  5. Necessary conditions for the performance (i.e., daytime) and date/time restrictions, if applicable

Deadline for applications is May 21, 2007.

We will be holding a meeting for all those interested in performing in the festival in early June and encourage you to attend, even if your exact performance plans have not yet been finalized.

Send all applications to Leslie Zucker, Performance Coordinator: leslieszucker@gmail.com and write 'Improv Fest Performer Proposal' in the subject line.
